Water Management:
Water is a critical resource, whether for human consumption, agricultural use or sanitation, and one that is in increasingly short supply in India. A serious water crisis faces us, if more sustainable ways of managing water are not put into place without delay. In most parts of rural India, groundwater is saline and polluted by chemicals. In addition, it is overexploited and its replenishment is limited by poor rainfall and ecological degradation. This state of affairs directly affects village health and prosperity, making water management crucial to any developmental activity.
Hamara Sankalp has undertaken a water management program, which focuses on promoting water consciousness, building water-harvesting structures, advocating water conservation practices and increasing access to safe drinking water.
Income Enhancement
In India, three-quarters of the poor live in rural areas. Chronic unemployment and under-employment are endemic to their lives, and even those who are employed earn barely enough to meet their basic needs. This situation is worsened by poor access to finance. Often the villagers have no choice but to borrow from local moneylenders at exploitative rates of interest, and soon find them heavily indebted. Through its income enhancement program the Foundation attempts to build the villagers’ knowledge and skills, thus enabling them to increase productivity and pursue new commercial opportunities, and ultimately to move above the poverty line.
The program focuses on increasing agricultural productivity, promoting entrepreneurship, developing common lands and creating off-farm opportunities.
